Thanks for asking! The first book your description brings to mind is M.E. Kerr's wonderfully titled Dinky Hocker Shoots Smack! It's got the complicated friendship between heavyset teens, the tensions with parents, and a lot of dialogue about books and literature which might cover the tutoring element. (No heroin use, despite the title!) The book was first published in 1972, stayed in print for a while, and got adapted into an after-school special that changed around some of the plot details. The Omaha Public Library no longer has a copy in our collection, but if you're interested we could try to round it up for you through inter-library loan. A little more detailed description of the book is available from the Retro YA blog.

Of course, there are some other possibilities, so if that doesn't look right email back or call 402-444-4800 and we can try to run down some alternate titles. Thanks again for your question!
