Q

I was wondering if I needed to have some sort of library card to do research. There were several areas that would ask me for my card number.

Answer

Thanks for your question! Many of our library's online databases and research tools do require a library card and the 4-digit PIN associated with a library account to access from outside the library. Most of those databases can be found in our Resource Center, though there may be links to them from other parts of our website. These resources are expensive and proprietary - the library card is how our members confirm their access to the databases through our subscription and can search them for free.

If you live in Douglas County, you can apply for a library card online or at any of our 12 library locations. To activate the card, a photo ID and proof of current address will be all we need. Access to our databases is also available inside the library - we have workstations dedicated for short research sessions that don't require a library card.

If you live outside the Omaha area, the process will be a bit more complicated, but there are still some options available. Feel free to follow up here or call 402-444-4800 with questions. Thanks again!
