I usually start by checking the Douglas County Assessor's website (the property valuation database) to get an idea of the age of a property. Your house appears to have been built in 1923. (I hope this link works; otherwise, you can start from here). This site also gives you the legal description, which you will need to trace the chain of possession, which you can do at the Register of Deeds, Suite H-09, 1819 Farnam St., Omaha.

Then I would head down to the W. Dale Clark Library, 3rd floor. You can use the city directories there (complete set going back to 1866) to see who was actually living in the house--because the history of a house is in large part the history of those who lived there. We have clipping files, history and biography files, and a number of reference works on different neighborhoods (and architecture) that may all be helpful.

If you have an Omaha Public Library card, you also have home access to the Historical Omaha World Herald (from the OPL home page, go to Resource Center and select Newspapers--you will want Omaha World Herald and then HISTORICAL Omaha World Herald). This is a great resource for finding interesting information about things that have happened in your home, or to previous occupants of it.

Do come on down to the Main Library, and we will be happy to give you any assistance you need. We are open every day, and parking is free on weekends and after 5 pm.
