Hello – I was wondering how long it takes to find out if my suggested purchases would be okayed? I requested two books to be purchased on January 1, 2018 and as yet have not received an answer. Would appreciate a reply at your earliest convenience. Thanks for your help in this matter. Also, is there a way I could be notified when my suggested purchase is put into the OPL system? I have to keep checking back, and then I am on the waiting list, instead of being the first one to be notified I can check it out. Thanks so much for your help!!
I appreciate the suggested books you have purchased at my request. I am an avid reader, and enjoy very much the services provided by the library. I also enjoy the plethora of books you continually offer for checkout. Thank You very much!

Answer

Thanks for asking! Regarding the suggestions for purchase you entered on the 1st, I'll check in with our collection development team but I can answer in general terms now. I usually receive responses on my own suggestions in a 7-10 day-ish range, and both holidays and flu season have been affecting the workflow a little. I'd expect that your suggestions will be reviewed soon.

Regarding your question about notification, checking the library catalog and your Bibliocommons account is the best way to keep track of when titles are ordered. Once you see the suggest a purchase status indicate that the suggestion has been approved and will be ordered, it typically appears in the catalog within a couple of days. Given the sheer volume of suggestions that come in our collection development staff cannot and do not offer to add people who have suggested the book to the hold list manually or send additional notices about the acquisition of the title.

Suggestions for purchase help us to know what our users are interested in and build a collection that better meets their needs. Patrons whose suggestions are ordered get free access to the material along with all of our borrowers, and the approval notification still gives a pretty good head start.

Thanks for your enthusiasm, and for helping us keep a robust and interesting library collection, and thanks for using AskOPL!
