Answer

Hello,

Could it be the author Peter Bowen? He wrote a Montana series with Gabriel Du Pre as the main character. He is described as "a Métis (French, Indian, and more) brand inspector, sometime lawman, whiskey drinker, top-notch fiddler, and politically incorrect warrior for justice."

There is also a series by Keith McCafferty. The main characters are Sean Stranahan (a P.I. and Montana's favorite fly-fisherman-detective) and Sheriff Martha Ettinger.

We carry both series at Omaha Public Library.  You can hold copies by going online and accessing your library account, or by calling your local branch. I could also hold copies for you, if you would like. I would need your library barcode number. If neither of these are it, let me know and I will keep looking!
