Q

Do you have any tools that would assist with planning a park?

I am working to assist in planning renovations for a park in my hometown and need to be able to create a visual and also see what other steps we need to look out for when planning. Thanks!

Thanks for asking! I'm going to list a few titles that cast a pretty broad net - some may be more or less useful for your specific park design need, but each one will offer different subject headings and keywords you can use to search for similar resources.

Thoren, Roxi. Landscapes of Change: Innovative Designs and Reinvented Sites

Cumberlidge, Claire. Design and Landscape for People

Lydon, Mike. Tactical Urbanism

Jabbour, Nikki. Groundbreaking Food Gardens

Walljasper, Jay. The Great Neighborhood Book

Lynda.com. RAD Lab: Revitalizing the City Block

I would also encourage you to look for resources from other sources focused on public space and training for community leaders. Project for Public Spaces and the Washington Municipal Research and Services Center both have some good content available.

(I apologize for including a complete tangent to your question, but I can't pass up the chance to recommend one of my favorite public domain books, Albert Good's WPA-era National Parks Service guide to park and recreation structures.)

Thanks again for using AskOPL!
