Q

Can I access the summer reading program from the OPL app?

I don't let my child access the internet on his tablet but he can access apps that I approve. I don't see a way to access the beanstalk UI from the OPL app?

Answer

Thanks for asking! The MyOPL app is developed by Bibliocommons, the company that manages our catalog, but they no longer offer Summer Reading software and we've turned to Beanstalk for that service. Since it's developed by a third party, you won't find Beanstalk features integrated into the MyOPL app.

Most of our patrons will access the mobile-responsive Beanstalk site through a web browser at https://omahalibrary.org/ or https://omahalibrary.beanstack.org/reader365. Unfortunately for this specific case, there is not a dedicated Beanstalk app for OPL's Summer Reading Program.

I can certainly respect your choice to avoid unrestricted browsing on your child's tablet! I don't have an ideal solution to offer, but you may wish to have your child log his reading activity with supervision on a desktop or other mobile device. Reading time can be logged together after the fact, or you can even report his reading time to your neighborhood librarian - whatever helps him feel like his reading is acknowledged and celebrated. A basic stopwatch or time clock app might be a simple, safe way to add a little tablet interactivity to his reading time and make it easier to log his reading in Beanstack later.

Please feel free to give us a call at 402-444-4800 or ask at your local library if you have additional questions! Thanks again for asking, and thanks for using AskOPL.
