I know that loan times vary by item. Is there anyone to determine how long a loan period is online before I checkout an item. I'd like to know that I can finish it before I check it out.

Most of your questions can be answered on our Circulation Policy page, but I'll go into some detail here:

Most items check out for 21 days.  This includes books (hardcover and paperback), magazines, audiobooks and music CDs.

DVDs will check out for 7 days, unless there are more than 2 DVDs in the set, like for a season of a TV show.  If the set has 3 discs or more, the checkout period is 14 days.

Ebooks will check out for 7 days, but you can change this in your account settings to 14 days if you wish.

There is one exception to the 21-day checkout for books.  We have an option for those who don't want to wait on a long list for the latest bestseller.  It's called Bestseller Express, and for a rental fee of $1, you can skip to the head of the line and check out a Bestseller Express copy of a new, popular title.  These copies are in a special section of the new book shelf at each library, and clearly marked.  Obviously since this collection is designed to skip the hold process, you won't be able to reserve a Bestseller Express copy online.

And there is one other exception:  Since we share a facility with Metropolitan Community College (the South Branch), they allow Omaha Library patrons to check out most of their items.  Most of these check out for 4 weeks.  You should be able to tell in our online catalog if a book is from Metro by looking at the details in its record - and also where it is shelved, as it will be either at South or another of MCC's campuses.

Thank you for your question!  Please let me know if I can provide any other assistance.
