Answer

Thanks for asking! There was a restaurant and lounge that operated under the name Varieties located at 13010 Arbor Street in the Orchard Plaza block. It opened in mid-1982 and closed prior to 1988 when an S.P. Ghetti's restaurant opened on the site. A local Hindu temple now stands in the same location.

An article printed in the Omaha World Herald, 4 Jan. 1982, Sunrise, p. 25. describes plans for Varieties, which was scheduled to open in early May of that year. The restaurant was a pilot of a new themed restaurant operated by the Village Inn restaurant group. The restaurant offered a Hollywood-inspired experience with rooms themed around a movie studio lot and typical movie settings like the Old West, outer space, Paris cafes and so on. The hosts and wait staff often dressed as or were selected as lookalikes of movie stars.

You can find a handful of articles about Varieties, and a substantial number of advertisements and classified listings, using the Historic Omaha World-Herald and Newsbank Omaha World-Herald databases with your library card. Coverage in the two databases changes over in 1983, so you'll find some listings in each one.

Thanks again for asking, and thanks for using AskOPL!
