How many recommendations can I make on digital books on overdrive?

I just discovered recommendations on the overdrive site, and it won't let me make any more for some books I want to be in line for when they become available. What is the limits & rules for that? If I dismiss a recommendation that became available and I'm on hold for, will I lose my place in line, or will it just allow me to make another recommendation?

Thanks for asking! I'm glad you've gotten into making recommendations through our Overdrive site. As of December 2016 or so, our Overdrive settings limit patrons to 5 digital title suggestions per account per month. This lines up with the limit of 5 per month on suggestions for purchase for physical items like print books or media. From my experience, the limit seems to reset around the first of the month. 

The count for the limit should apply on recommendations submitted in a given month rather than "active" / yet to be ordered recommendations. So there's no benefit to dismissing a recommendation for a title that's been acquired. I believe that you can dismiss a title from your recommendation list, if you choose, without affecting the status of a hold on the item... but just to be on the safe side, I wouldn't test it with a title you're particularly excited for!

  1. I have been a little frustrated with recommendations. I put four on and three of them have gone to hold or borrow. (I dismissed them from recommendations with no problems). Now my problem is, I’m told I am at my limit for recommendations. If you're correct that it resets at first of month that will be good, but why did I only get four!

  2. Sorry for the frustration! Five is the limit, so I don't know why you apparently only got four; I can't see your account from my end. You could try Overdrive Support I will forward this question to our tech office in the meantime.
