Can I look at Sanborn maps online or do I need to go to one of the branches to see them?

I'm looking for maps that show my house on 30th and Dewey St that was built in 1910.

Thanks for asking! Our subscription to Digital Sanborn Maps will allow you to access it online from home (or anywhere) with your library card number and 4-digit PIN. You can reach it through our Resource Center at, under the category Genealogy, or try this direct link

The layout of the Sanborn Maps database can take some getting used to, and so can the way that the maps themselves were produced for different parts of the city over different years. Select the Omaha/Douglas County area, then a date range, then a volume, and look at the index pages first to see where to look for the right house number range on Dewey.

I would recommend looking first at the 1934 printing, volume 1, page 37, then checking the indexes for other years. It's a shame, but the 1918 edition - the first that might have covered the house - misses it by about two blocks to the west!

You're welcome to give us a call if you have trouble getting in and around the database, either at 402-444-4800 or to the team that most often works with our local history materials at 402-444-4825.
