Every so often I will add something to my "for later" shelf and I will get a message that says it's already there which I know it's not. Why does that happen?

Thanks for asking! The most common reason I've seen this happen is with highly popular new titles that have Bestseller Express copies - those leased books that check out for $1 and allow a reader to pay to 'skip the queue' and borrow the book for 7 days. The internal logic of the catalog isn't quite clever enough to recognize that having a Bestseller Express copy checked in at some library isn't necessarily what a For Later shelf user is looking for when there are still a hundred people on the hold list.

Unfortunately, I haven't found a way to resolve that particular quirk! Our catalog vendor has begun to feature the "Available now from my for later shelf..." section quite prominently in the user dashboard, which is great, but has brought a few questions like this to the forefront.

Please let us know if that doesn't seem like an explanation for why you're seeing these particular items as Available from your For Later shelf, and thanks for using AskOPL!
