Q

What books are on the H.W. Wilson's Children's Core Collection?

I'm taking a children's literature couse and we're asked to find books from the H.W. Wilson Children's Core Collection. I am unsure of what that is and how I can find books from that collection. Could you tell me what that is and if I can find books from that collection at the OPLs?

Answer

Thanks for asking! Since 1909, the publisher H.W. Wilson has printed a catalog of fiction and non-fiction titles that they recommend for children's collections in libraries. Omaha Public Library does not use the Wilson Children's Core Collection as a key element of our children's collection development, but I'm sure that our collection contains many of the books identified in the catalog. The tricky part will be finding a copy of the catalog.

We do not have a copy of the current catalog available, either in print or online. If your instructor is asking you to find titles from the catalog, there *should* be a copy available either on course reserve or in an electronic subscription through your school. If not, the best bet may be to scope out the 1991 edition that, for whatever reason, is still in print reference at the Millard Branch Library. Once you can find a copy of the catalog to know what books are included, our staff or our online catalog can help you locate the books that OPL owns.

Happy hunting, and thanks for using AskOPL!
