What is the difference between manga and a graphic novel?

My daughter is always talking about both, but I don't understand the difference.

Thanks for asking! They are both types of illustrated books, what you might consider comic books.

Manga are Japanese in origin although not all manga are from Japan. They are thick books that are a bit taller and wider than a typical paperback. They are sometimes are read from back to front and right to left. There are many different manga, from ones about school to magicians to ones about manga artists. Some well known ones are Dragonball Z and Naruto.

Graphic novels are more like traditional comic books, except they have been bound together. Here are the stories of Spiderman, Superman, Wonder Woman and many, many others. There are also some graphic novels that are versions of other stories, from the Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys to adapations of Rick Riordian and John Patterson's popular kid's books.

Both collect together stories that are told installments, often a weekly or monthly basis. Both often contain not only complex stories but also interesting art. At Omaha Public Library we have manga and graphic novels for children, teens and adults.

I hope this answers your question. Please let us know if we can be of further assistance.
