Why was PBR awarded the blue ribbon for beers?

PBR, the popular beer, has a blue ribbon. Who gave it to them? When? Why?

Interesting question!

According to some sources (including PBR,) the beer now named Pabst Blue Ribbon won a blue ribbon for "America's Best" at the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago.  That award has often been disputed, with no clear agreement.
