Can't remember the name of fantasy book! It's about a teenager who attends wizard school/ college. He is short money and can play an instrument to a very high standard. He borrows money from a loan shark who had been kicked of the academy. There's another character who lives beneath the school building but is mute! Any ideas???
He has rooms over an inn, where he plays instead of paying rent.

Interesting! Do you remember whenabouts you read it, or roughly when it was published? There are some possibilities going back even to the early 1980s. Knowing if it's in a pre- or post-Harry Potter era will change the kinds of stories we search for.

Though I don't remember a serious focus on music, there are elements of the story that make me think of Lev Grossman's The Magicians. It's got a wizard school but in a more contemporary setting. For some reason the loan shark got me thinking that way... would you say the book you remember was a 'traditional' high-fantasy setting or something more modern?

If it's a high-fantasy setting, take a look at Patrick Rothfuss' The Name of the Wind - actually, I'm pretty sure this is it. The hero Kvothe is a trained musician, attends a wizard's college, and ends his many adventures running the same inn where he used to work and play.

For a leap back in time, Alan Dean Foster's Spellsinger series features a rather freewheeling young man (and rock guitarist) who's transported to a fantastic world. This one has the music covered but misses the school.

More recently, C. Robert Cargill has an interesting modern fantasy called Dreams & Shadows that might be worth a glance.

Hope one of those catches - if not, shoot an email back and we'll see what else we can turn up!
