I'm looking for a book but I can't remember the name. It was set around christmas time and is narrated by the daughter of a mother who was tragically killed at a shelter for people to run to if they were being domestically abused. The husband had found out that his wife had fled there and was ready to shot her however, the mother who was working there stepped in from of her and took the bullet causing her death. The daughter recalls her memories of that night as she was very young but now speaks as a woman who has moved on in life. The book has turns and twists, I remember random details e.g. a house by the sea, visiting an art shop. Anyone who helps me figure out this mystery, I owe my life to because it's driving me mad!

This one took a little digging, but I think I've found something close.  Could it be Her Mother's Shadow, by Diana Chamberlin?  It's actually a sequel to the author's Kiss River.  It's the story of a woman who is caring for a friend's rebellious daughter and remembers her own mother's death murder at a shelter.

From the Publishers Weekly review:  On Christmas 1990, 13-year-old Lacey O'Neill watches as her mother, a volunteer at a battered women's shelter, is fatally shot by a man aiming at his estranged wife. Lacey grows up in thrall to her mother's memory, at first trying to emulate the saintly Annie and later rejecting her after learning about her many infidelities.

But yes, the book has many more turns and twists than that, including a few romantic ones, when a stranger arrives in town and digs up details of Lacey's past.

Does that sound like the right title?  If not, let us know and we'll keep looking.  Thanks for your question!
