Thanks for asking! There have been a lot of books written about the impact of AIDS in Africa, and how it's affected the families and children of people who died from the disease. I'll include a few here, but a little more information will help us find you the book you're looking for.

First, was it the true story of the girl's life? If so, it might be Warrior Princess, the story of Princess Kasune Zulu. She worked through her mothers' death and her diagnosis with HIV by becoming an educator and advocate for AIDS patients in Zambia and around the world.

If it was a fictional story, how old is the girl when we meet her? The next two books that I list will start with heroines that are teenagers and written for a young adult audience, then one with a younger girl, and one picture book.

This Thing Called the Future, or Chanda's Secrets? The Heaven Shop? Or Gift Days?

If none of those were right, which book was most like the story you remember? Feel free to email back and we can keep searching. Thanks again for your question!
