Answer

Thanks for asking! To balance federal labor standards and some of the scheduling and safety requirements of library work, 16 years of age is the minimum age to work at Omaha Public Library.

If you're 16 or older and interested in applying, you'll use the City of Omaha's job board. Follow the link to 'Current openings' and search with the keyword 'library' to see open positions. The most common entry-level position is the Library Aide - handling materials, shelving, and customer service, especially technology assistance, make it a diverse and demanding job, but it's a great introduction to the world of library work.

If you haven't hit your sixteenth birthday yet, hopefully you'll keep us in mind for the future. You may also want to consider volunteering at your local library to get some exposure and see if it's a good fit for you.

Please feel free to email here or call 402-444-4800 with general questions. All hiring-related questions will start through the job board linked above, and the city Human Resources department will be your first contact there at 402.444.5300.
